Wild Card Tariff Changes 2018

Wild Card Holders
Chapman’s Peak Frequent Users

Dear Madam/Sir

REVISION TO DISCOUNT STRUCTURE FOR FREQUENT USERS – CHAPMAN’S PEAK DRIVE

The directors of Entilini Concession, along with representatives of the Provincial Government of the Western Cape, met recently to review the various frequent user discount structures for Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Given the increasing congestion on the city’s road network, a decision was taken to revise the discount structures of both Frequent Users and Wild Card Holders. It is intended that the new discount structures will make the use of Chapman’s Peak Drive more attractive as a commuter route between the South Peninsula and Cape Town’s CBD. From July 2018, the discount structure for standard Frequent Users and Wild Card holders will be closely aligned.

The current discount structure for Wild Card Holders (ie: percentage discount to the standard tariff) will be largely retained, with some differences arising from rounding of the new tariffs. The comparison of the current discount structure for Wild Card Users against those proposed for the 2018/2019 year is tabulated below.

The significant change for 2018/2019 will be that Wild Card Holders will now only enjoy a discount over a standard Frequent User on the first two trips which they make over Chapman’s Peak Drive in any month. From then on the discounted tariffs for Wild Card Holders will be identical to those of standard Frequent Users. (Both Frequent User and Wild Card holder discounts will be capped at approximately 60% of the standard tariff for uses exceeding 25 trips per month.)

The additional discount which a registered (and bona fide) Wild Card holder will receive over a Standard Frequent user will approximate 30 - 40% of the annual cost of a single Wild Card membership, on the basis that the registered Wild Card holder makes a minimum of two trips over Chapman’s Peak Drive every month of the year.

In summary, the need to take out Wild Card membership to enjoy significantly discounted tariffs for regular use of Chapman’s Peak Drive has been dispensed with, yet an incentive for bona fide Wild Card users who travel at least twice a month over the pass is maintained. (Wild Card holders will still need to register annually at the plaza should they wish to take advantage of the additional Wild Card discount).

The new tariff structures will come into effect on 1 July 2018, upon promulgation in the Provincial Gazette.

Alien Vegetation Clearing is Back

Frequent Users of Chapman's Peak Drive will be familiar with our periodic road closures for Alien Vegetation clearing.   This is essential to protect our delicate eco-systems and prevent the alien plants from stealing ground water or destroying our natural fynbos.

SANParks in conjunction with Working on Fire will be sending out a specialized team to clear these aliens using ropes and technology to chop and clear the slopes of Chapman's Peak Drive and protect them from the alien threat.  Whilst they are at work, the drive below will be encounter falling debris, making it dangerous for passage.

The SANParks Alien Vegetation clearing unit will tackle the slopes of Chappies between  09h30 and 15h30 on Wednesday 14 March and Wednesday 28 March 2018 - weather permitting.

Chapman's Peak Drive is committed to protecting our slopes and as such Chappies will be closed to all traffic as per the schedule whilst the Alien Vegetation Clearing Team takes to the slopes of the mountain above our drive to remove as many aliens as possible on the above mentioned dates.

We understand the inconvenience but appreciate your assistance in the process of removing these aliens during which time Chapman's Peak Drive will be closed to all traffic - vehicles,  bicycles and pedestrians.  Please try and travel before 09h00 or after 16h00 on Wednesdays.

Should you need to travel between Noordhoek and Hout Bay between those times, kindly use Ou Kaapse Weg as an alternative route.  We thank you for your co-operation and trust the mild inconvenience will be worth everyone's time to rid our slopes of Alien Vegetation.

Should you have any queries please call 021 791 8222

Leaves are falling, Autumn is calling

While summer is by no means completely over, the days are getting a little shorter and the nights a little longer. The Autumn equinox in the Southern Hemisphere, takes place on 20 March 2018 - this is the date that day and night are almost equal length all over the world.

Little Lions Head is a fantastic walk above Llundudno and we hear it is a beautiful autumn equinox sacred site.  Chapman's Peak Hike is another worthy outing and one can never go wrong with a sunset picnic on #Chappies.  Remember that 21 March is a public holiday: Human Rights Day is this year on Wednesday so equinox night is like a weekend!  Sunset will be at 18:57 on the 20 March.

If you are joining us for sundowners, then please note the fixed hours for validity of the Free Day Pass which is strictly enforced. The Day Pass voucher, valid from the Hout Bay side only, allows for free use of designated picnic areas, viewing spots and mountain trails, before the Day Pass Control Point, within the designated hours. Remember to keep your Day Pass as proof of entry and then when you leave, return it to the toll collector before the closing time noted below.

Summer (Oct – Mar): 06:00  –  20:00

Winter (Apr – Sep): 07:00  –  18:30

Do note that we are currently in the summer time but the hours for the day pass will change at the end of the month to winter timings, closing at 18:30 so take advantage of the current 8pm time! This principle applies to all national parks and as Chapman's Peak Drive falls within SANParks jurisdiction, the day pass rule is applicable.

Autumn in Cape Town, which occurs between March and May, is one of its most beautiful seasonal periods. Tree leaves and shrubs turn a bright red, earthy brown, vibrant orange and yellow, while temperatures stay pleasant.  Some say that autumn is the best time to visit Cape Town, and #Chappies sunsets seem to be more spectacular than ever.

There is also tons happening in the city.... March is festival time in the Cape!

  • Cape Town and peninsula: Cape Town Cycle Tour: 11 March 2018. Make sure to be informed also about the road closures that weekend - #Chappies will be closed for 24 hours
  • Cape Town, Maynardville: Community Chest Carnival. 13 - 16 March 2018. Join the fun at the annual international food festival with activities for the whole family.
  • Cape Town, Greenpoint: Cape Town Carnival. 17 March 2018. Join the colourful event on the Fan Walk from 15h00 or book a ticket/seat for the evening parade in Green Point.
  • Cape Town, CBD: Cape Town Festival. 21 March 2018. Annual Human Rights Day festival in Company Gardens. TBC.
  • Cape Town CBD: South African Eco Film Festival 22 – 30 March 2018. Labia Theatre, Cape Town
  • Cape Town CBD: Cape Town International Jazz Festival 23 – 24 March 2018. Cape Town International Convention Centre

The 40th edition of biggest timed bicycle race in the world takes place on the 11 March 2018 - The Cape Town Cycle Tour, with some 40,000 cyclists participating in the annual event. With the MTB races and Junior races completed this past weekend, all eyes will be focused on Sunday's event and local and visiting riders will be out and about with final preparations.  Chapman’s Peak Drive is the premier training route for the upcoming Cape Town Cycle Tour. Cyclists want to train on the actual race route as much as possible,  so please be aware and considerate of an increase in cyclists on the drive.  Road safety relies on mutual respect. Motorists may not pass within 1 metre of a cyclist. Cyclists must ride in single file. Being considerate is an essential part of sharing the road and enhancing the safety of all road users.

This year the Cape Town Cycle Tour has a new start at the Grand Parade leading past Cape Town Castle, onto Nelson Mandela boulevard , on past UCT on Edinburgh Drive,  followed by a fast 25km to Simon's Town.   The route continues past Smitswinkel and the entrance to Cape of Good Hope section of Table Mountain National Park, before turning north and winding through the villages of Scarborough and Misty Cliffs.   On the Cycle Tour website, the next section, which involves Chappies, is described below- don't underestimate our beautiful drive.

"Then it all gets hard again, with the flat run back to Fish Hoek straight into the South Easter softening the legs for the Chapman’s Peak/Suikerbossie double-feature to come. Chapman’s Peak is a two-part trial; Little Chappies is short and steep, but over quickly and buoyed by the spectator support at its foot. The main climb is longer, but flatter, and offers distractions aplenty (force yourself to look) as you ride one of the world’s most beautiful roads. "

From Chappies, cyclists must face Suikerbossie,  before the final stretch through Bakoven, Camps Bay, Clifton and Sea Point to the finish in Green Point.   Please see route map for the event here

Chappies Road Closure for Cape Town Cycle Tour

Please note that #Chappies will be closed to traffic for 24 hours from Saturday 10 March 2018 at 18h00 until Sunday 11 March 2018 at 18h00.

Full Road closures for the City of Cape Town will be made available on Cape Town Cycle Tour website https://www.capetowncycletour.com/

Chappies Road Closure for Two Oceans Ultra Marathon

Please note that over the long Easter Weekend, another major sporting event will take place on #Chappies - the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (Saturday 31 March 2018).  The Two Oceans marathon has been called “The world’s most beautiful marathon”, partly due to its’ routing over #Chappies.

Chapman’s Peak Drive will be closed to vehicular traffic for this iconic Cape Town event.  Chappies will also have a temporary road closure from 03h30 and should reopen at 14h00 on Sat 31 March.

Congrats to our winners..

Entilini Operations wanted to thank all its Chapman's Peak Drive frequent users for their continued support particularly during the winter period of 2017 and ran a prize reward whereby all registered frequent users (even new ones) were included in a lucky draw to win prizes worth R10,000 to be a tourist in our own city!  Some T's and C's applied.

Thanks to all the Chapman's Peak Drive registered Frequent Users who took the time and effort to get yourselves in the draw for the monthly reward programme.  This was a little more laborious than we expected so thank you for liking our Facebook  page and those of our fabulous friends who provided the prizes, we thank you for supporting them too.  From our side, the competition was more complex to manage than we had realised, due to all the variables being verified and transparent results being transparent, so the winners took longer than expected to be announced.  Apologies for the wait and we'll keep it simpler next time!

Thank you

If you haven't done so already, it is worth liking these Facebook pages for the most fun ways to get to around Cape Town, interesting facts about Cape Town, lots of humour and some serious style. You won't be disappointed. Thank you so much to Tim Clarke, Lee Peacock and  David Ash for your generous support and we hope you have a fantastic 2018.

Finally congratulations to our winners and hope you enjoy your journeys to Cape Point - we look forward to hearing all about it! The winners are...

Manual Mode on #Chappies

Chapman's Peak Drive operates using a large number of integrated electronic systems. It is, however, essential for our staff to be able to function without manually without these systems and still provide the functionality and customer service to our drive users.

In order to provide essential staff training, Entilini Operations will go onto "Manual Mode" for one hour at least once a month.  During this 60 minute period, the electronic systems will be shut down completely and we ask users of Chapman's Peak Drive to be patient during this training hour.  A manual mode sign will be in place to notify road users that Chappies is not functioning on auto.

Entilini Operations thanks you for your patience and understanding during the manual mode period -in order to improve our operational service to you, our customers.
