To celebrate a momentous 100 years of Chapman’s Peak Drive and show our respect and admiration for this wonder-of-the-world, the following partners have collaborated with Chapman's Peak Drive to celebrate 100 years of wonder with 100 days of giveaways.
With an average of 15 hours of sunlight during Cape Town summer days – the city is a magical destination with Table Mountain forming the backbone and backdrop of the peninsula. Endless ocean views and golden beaches surround the mountains, and in between there is a vibrant modern city. Considered one of the most beautiful cities on the planet, it is a cosmopolitan city and like any city has it’s share of dangers and crime. A few precautions and some universal common sense should keep you safe whilst you enjoy the magnificence of the Mother City.
Chapman’s Peak Drive is an area of natural and scenic beauty and wide open space. We welcome all our visitors but ask everyone to respect the rules of the road and all signage and look after your belongings.
Keep to the speed limit – it’s there for a reason! Chappies is a narrow, winding road with many road users. We ask cyclists to keep in single file and motorists to pass when safe to do so.
Chapman’s Peak has steep cliffs and Cape Town is notorious for it’s South-Easterly Wind that can blow over the summer period. There is signage at the main viewpoint stating: "CAUTION! Strong winds and steep cliffs. Please stay behind the fence at all times." and we ask our visitors to adhere to the rules particularly in dangerous areas or in strong winds.
Please take care of your belongings. Avoid carrying large sums of cash, and try not to have expensive electronic devices or jewelry in plain sight. Try not to leave your belongings unattended.
Lock your car doors and keep valuables hidden – this includes the viewpoint at Chapman’s Peak Drive. If possible do not leave valuable items in your car – but if this unavoidable, ensure they are locked and hidden in the boot (trunk) of your car.
Chapman’s Peak Drive has CCTV cameras in key areas, however it is not possible to cover the entire drive.
Should you encounter any suspicious behaviour – please report activity to our control centre 021-791 8220 with as much detail as possible.
Chapman’s Peak Drive lies within a sector of Table Mountain National Park and the peak itself is a very accessible and beautiful day hike that is highly recommended.
If you are going hiking, we recommend you hike in a group or use the services of a qualified mountain guide. If you are going without a guide, make sure you take a map, keep to demarcated paths. Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back. Ensure you have returned well before dark.
Although the Table Mountain Chain seems like an easy stroll – the weather can change your casual day hike into a serious challenge. In the heat of the day, make sure you have a hat, sunscreen and always carry some water with you. The weather can also change quickly so it is advisable to take something warm with you.

The SANParks Alien Vegetation clearing unit will be clearing alien vegetation on the slopes of Chapman’s Peak Drivethis November and as such Chapman’s Peak Drive will be closed between 09h30 and 15h30 every Wednesday in November 2018- weather permitting.
Chapman's Peak Drive is committed to protecting our slopes and is working with SANparks in their efforts to remove as many alien plants from the mountain as possible every Wednesday in November. This is essential to protect our delicate eco-systems and prevent the alien plants from stealing ground water or destroying our natural fynbos.
Specialized teams clear these aliens using ropes and technology to chop and clear the slopes of Chapman's Peak Drive and protect them from the alien threat. Whilst they are at work, the drive below will be encounter falling debris, making it dangerous for passage.
We understand the inconvenience but appreciate your assistance in the process of removing these aliens during which time Chapman's Peak Drive will be closed to all traffic – vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians. Please try and travel before 09h00 or after 16h00 on Wednesdays.
Should you need to travel between Noordhoek and Hout Bay between those times, kindly use Ou Kaapse Weg as an alternative route. We thank you for your co-operation and trust the mild inconvenience will be worth everyone's time to rid our slopes of Alien Vegetation.
Should you have any queries please call 021 791 8220

Chapman’s Peak Drive is proud to be part of South Africa’s Natural Heritage as we prepare to celebrate Heritage Day in South Africa. Natural Heritage has been described as “the sum total of the elements of biodiversity, including flora and fauna, ecosystems and geological structures. Heritage is that which is inherited from past generations, maintained in the present, and bestowed to future generations”
Heritage Day is a South African Public Holiday that takes place on 24 September each year. It is a reminder of the nation’s cultural diversity and is an opportunity to express national unity, promote South African identity and the notion that variety is a national asset.
“The day is one of our newly created public holidays and its significance rests in recognising aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the land in which we live,” said the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology in 1996.
Heritage Day has also become synonymous with #nationalbraaiday – a cultural tradition embraced by all South Africans, to unite around a fire. The combination of fire and nature are not always compatible. Due to Chapman’s Peak Drive commitment to our Natural Heritage and World Heritage Status, we have an obligation to protect and preserve the diversity and beauty in which we find ourselves (For any doubters, please recall the Wild Fires of March 2015). As such, we kindly request that no fires or braais take place on Chapman’s Peak Drive on Heritage or any other day. Picnics are welcome.
We recommend joining public braais or events happening in and around Cape Town.

Man’s best friend. For those fur parents out there, your dog may be your best friend but not necessarily everyone else’s. We are constantly surprised on Chapman’s Peak Drive to see people walking their dogs believing that their dog is superior to everyone and everything else. Whilst you may know that your dog is the most well behaved, obedient pooch in the neighbourhood, in reality this may not be the case.
In Cape Town, we are privileged to have plenty of open leash-free spaces to walk our furry friends. Table Mountain National Park actually allows dogs in the park – one of very few parks that do allow dog access. Admittedly areas that form part of TMNP require dog-walkers to have a Level 1 My Activity Permit. These permits are valid for 12 months from the day of purchase.
Part of Chapman’s Peak Drive falls within the TMNP jurisdiction, so it is our policy to adhere to the South African National Park guidelines on dog walking and the code of conduct. Take a look at the interactive dog-walking guide produced by the park, which has great information and all the park etiquette’s for taking your dog out with you.
In essence, compliance means that dogs must be under effective control of the handler at all times (should the handler or the dog cause an incident, the dog will be deemed to be out of control and the handler can be held liable). Handlers should always carry a leash and dogs should be leashed – at the beginning and end of a walk, when passing through designated parking areas or picnic areas; if the handler is unable to control the dog, or if the dog is aggressive or potentially dangerous.
There have been two separate incidents recently when the maintenance team were charged by dogs walking with a customer. First aid treatment was required for one of these and the second incident was a near miss. Luckily nothing serious but a big fright from the team picking up litter.
Dog walkers are requested to promote good behaviour and consideration to other users and visitors, whilst maintaining respect for and reducing the impact on the pristine environment. Dog handlers should be sensitive that not everyone likes dogs and some people are afraid of them. Dogs should be controlled at all times, particularly if someone is ill at ease. Dog walkers should give right of way to those unaccompanied by dogs and should allow sufficient space for others walking with dogs. Dog handlers should not allow their dogs to foul footpaths and tracks; hence faeces should be removed and deposited in bins, where these are provided. Dogs may not disturb, injure or kill any wildlife.
It would be devastating to ban dog walking on Chapman’s Peak Drive – we are sure your dog loves walking on #Chappies as much as you do. Please put your dog on a leash and follow the codes of conduct for dog walking. Life is more fun to walk/hike/run with your furry four-legged friend - let's keep it that way.

For as long as cyclists and other vehicles have coexisted, there’s been conflict on the roads globally. It’s a complicated relationship, with equal amounts of fear and fury. Chapman’s Peak Drive is no different – with a finite amount of space on the road to share – if there is a best practice solution to share the drive then surely everyone should try their best to share it? Sharing the road goes both ways, for safety reasons (and pure respect), especially on narrow twisting roads like Chapman’s Peak Drive.
Entilini Operations appeals to cyclists to observe the single file rule and road closures whilst using Chappies. Signage and road markings have been amended or erected recently with message reminders to cyclists to stay in single file, in the hopes of co-operation. Unfortunately the signs on the booms at the plaza were too heavy and affected the boom mechanisms. Amendments to the sign or use of a lighter material is being investigated.
Chappies is a toll road and is maintained as a shared resource for all road users. Regardless of which "group" you belong to, all users must adhere to the rules of the road as provided by Provincial and National legislation. Chapman's Peak Drive adheres to both sets of legislation and as Chappies is a unique route, comprising of a narrow winding mountain pass, it is essential that all road users adhere to the rules for safety reasons.
We all love Chappies! Lets not compromise access or usage. There are few more beautiful spots in this gorgeous city of ours than Chapman's Peak Drive... the walkers, the runners, the cyclists, the Sunday Drivers, the tour buses, the gobsmacked self-drive visitors join the daily commuters on Chapman's Peak Drive for the sheer joy & pleasure of being there. Motorists please be reminded that the speed limit on Chapman's Peak Drive is 40km/hour and we ask you to stay wider of the rider. Cyclists please stay in single file. Please share the road. Like it or not – cyclists and vehicles have to get along on our beloved #Chappies because it matter too much not to.
