Chapman’s Peak Drive is proud to be part of South Africa’s Natural Heritage as we prepare to celebrate Heritage Day in South Africa. Natural Heritage has been described as “the sum total of the elements of biodiversity, including flora and fauna, ecosystems and geological structures. Heritage is that which is inherited from past generations, maintained in the present, and bestowed to future generations”
Heritage Day is a South African Public Holiday that takes place on 24 September each year. It is a reminder of the nation’s cultural diversity and is an opportunity to express national unity, promote South African identity and the notion that variety is a national asset.
“The day is one of our newly created public holidays and its significance rests in recognising aspects of South African culture which are both tangible and difficult to pin down: creative expression, our historical inheritance, language, the food we eat as well as the land in which we live,” said the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology in 1996.
Heritage Day has also become synonymous with #nationalbraaiday – a cultural tradition embraced by all South Africans, to unite around a fire. The combination of fire and nature are not always compatible. Due to Chapman’s Peak Drive commitment to our Natural Heritage and World Heritage Status, we have an obligation to protect and preserve the diversity and beauty in which we find ourselves (For any doubters, please recall the Wild Fires of March 2015). As such, we kindly request that no fires or braais take place on Chapman’s Peak Drive on Heritage or any other day. Picnics are welcome.
We recommend joining public braais or events happening in and around Cape Town.
