Perched along the rugged coastline of the Western Cape, Chapman's Peak Drive stands as a testament to engineering prowess and natural beauty. Beyond its breath-taking views, this iconic route holds a rich history that weaves together tales of perseverance, innovation, and the enduring allure of the Cape Peninsula. Join us on a journey through time as we unravel the captivating history of Chapman's Peak Drive.

Early Exploration: Long before the construction of Chapman's Peak Drive, the indigenous Khoi and San people traversed the Cape Peninsula, leaving behind traces of their ancient presence. European explorers, including Bartholomew Diaz in 1488 and later Jan van Riebeeck, contributed to the exploration and mapping of the region.

Table Mountain Sandstone: Chapman's Peak Drive winds its way through the Table Mountain Group Sandstone, a geological formation that dates back millions of years. The sandstone not only shaped the landscape but also played a crucial role in the construction of the road.

Construction Challenges: The idea of a coastal road along Chapman's Peak was conceived in the early 1900s, but the challenging terrain and financial constraints delayed the project for decades. Construction officially began in 1915 and faced numerous setbacks, including World War I and the Great Depression.

Thomas Bain's Legacy: Renowned South African engineer Thomas Bain, known for his expertise in road construction, took charge of designing Chapman's Peak Drive. Completed in 1922, the road showcased Bain's ingenuity, featuring impressive cuttings into the cliffs and a series of breath-taking curves.
100 years wonder

A Modern Marvel: Chapman's Peak Drive quickly gained fame for its stunning vistas and engineering marvels. However, the road's maintenance became a constant challenge due to rock falls and unstable slopes. In 2003, the route underwent a significant upgrade, introducing modern safety measures and securing its status as a National Monument.

Scenic Delights and Preservation: Today, Chapman's Peak Drive is not merely a road but a scenic journey that offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean along the Cape Peninsula. Chapman’s Peak Drive is more than just a drive to commute, offering frequent users ease of access between Hout Bay and Noordhoek but also for those who like to explore regularly and enjoy the beauty of the Cape Floral Kingdom, coming to use natures gift for fitness, breathing of the freshest air, and exploring the historical value of this iconic space. There is so much to offer that you will want to return more than you thought you would; and if you use Chapmans Peak Drive frequently, there are perks to becoming a frequent user.

During the winter period safety is paramount and we follow a strict road closure protocol. This is guided by triggers activated by high risk weather conditions and linked to specific thresholds such as high wind speed gusts and also the amount of rain within a particular time frame. Thus the road can be closed within seconds and especially from the Hout Bay side once you have passed the electronic signs indicating the open and close notices by the time you reach the toll and you are informed the road has been closed. We do understand that this could be very frustrating but the safety of all users and our team is high on our operational requirements and status. A wind trigger would mean a minimum waiting period of 3 hours to determine whether the road can reopen. A rain trigger minimum wait is 12 hours and a combination of this with at times rock falls and clean up with further safety checks, makes for extended closure times. We thank you for your patience during these times.

In order to manage and maintain this valuable asset as well as working closely with partners such as the Government of Western Cape and SANparks as major stakeholders, we are obligated through our contractual agreement and in line with inflation to increase the toll tariffs annually.

The toll tariffs increase from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2024 are as follows:

Category       Tariff             Description
Category 1     R40               Motor Bikes
Category 2     R61               Kombi / Minibus / Big 4X4 / Car / Bakkie
Category 3     R245             Midibus / 2 axle truck
Category 4     R613             Tourbus / 3 axle bus

We are happy to confirm that the Minister approved a special rebate for “small delivery vehicles” as from 1 July 2023. This is specifically for vehicles with a double wheel axle like the Kia and Dyna or small delivery vehicles that were previously restricted from Noordhoek. These vehicles will be classified as a Category 2 vehicle and able to travel in both directions from 1 July 2023. Note, they will not be able to register as Frequent Users.

All users of Chapman's Peak Drive are encouraged to drive, enjoy the fresh air and open responsibly with all road users, from cyclists to buses and especially our visitors who might not be familiar with our road rules. Also please ensure no litter or graffiti is left behind.

Being in one of the best cities in the world and one of the most scenic drives too and being able to have celebrated 100 years earlier this year, we are sure you agree that we can continue celebrating during December. Though as is found anywhere in the world, you have to be aware and alert and enjoy it all with some safety and precaution in mind. Here are a few tips to take into consideration to keep you and your loved ones safe as you enjoy Ke Dezemba.

Be a responsible driver:

Adhere to the rules of the road and the speed limit/s. Do not drink and drive and remember Chappies is an absolutely spectacular drive but be cautious as the road is narrow and winding, so please respect the speed limit. You can expect and need to respect all users on the drive, whether you’re a walker, runner or a cyclist or motor cyclist or driver of a car, truck or tour bus. Especially at this time of year we are expecting many more out and about and not forgetting to at times keep an eye out for any wildlife too. We request that cyclist also adhere to the road rules and keep in single file as per signs and road markings and that all motorised users have some patience and to pass cyclists when it is safe to do so.

Stay in demarcated areas and routes:

It is very important to stay behind the fence and clearly marketed demarcated areas and on routes to avoid any incidents or accidents. The main view point is on steep cliffs and when exploring this section be sure to follow all rules as indicated and or if any officials are around to share information. There are times when the extremely strong winds of the Cape of storms can push you along so it’s important to not get too close to cliff edges and especially where there are fences and signs do not cross them at all.

Keep your valuables safe

Unfortunately there has been criminal activities all over the world and we have had our share of incidents too. Thus we advise you to keep your valuables locked up and out of sight in your vehicle/s when you exit them. Be sure to look after your belongings. We advise not carrying large sums of money and expensive devices and jewellery to not be flaunted. Do not leave any belongings unattended.

Should any suspicious behaviour and or incidents occur, please report it to our control centre with as much detail as possible on: 021791 8220.

We are in Table Mountain National Park so enjoy all activities with safety at all times:

When hiking be sure to hike in groups, or book a registered and qualified guide or use an updated and proper route map.

Chapman’s Peak Drive is bounded by Table Mountain National Park as part of SANParks and there are various rules and regulations in place as well as officials who are likely to patrol and also keep some form of order. Though we would like you to enjoy our scenic natural beauty; Chapman’s Peak itself is a key reason in Hout Bay being established and we highly recommend this peak as a hike which will afford you of the most stunning views of Hout Bay and Noordhoek. Always follow all hikers’ rules and safety precautions, never hike alone and always hike in a group and always keep to the paths. Make sure someone has been informed and knows where you are hiking and what time you’re expected back and do not hike in the dark.

Sunday 8 May 2022 the drive was open to the public who came out to celebrate and enjoy the day, the picnic sites and pull over sections were packed and the weather was great. Our staff also had their celebration with a braai and special honor of the ten long standing staff members being part of a canon gun salute at the site of the frame. There was also a parade of vehicles and motorcycles as part of the celebrations and created a great vibe and cheerful atmosphere. The Hout Bay Yacht Club also hosted a sailing race and rowing events as their way of being part to the celebrations. A group of bikers came through and drove the route to celebrating the 100 years and in honor of their friend surviving cancer.
