Hiking

With the Table Mountain Chain running the length of the Cape Peninsula, there is little doubt that hiking on the mountain is a popular Cape Town activity. Silvermine Nature Reserve, Cape of Good Hope section of the Table Mountain National Park are popular hiking destinations in the Cape Peninsula. The National Park offers an accessible wilderness experience with spectacular views.

The Chapman's Peak hike itself, is a moderate hike and should take 2 - 3 hours in total depending on the length of your rest stops. Park near the Day Pass ticket collectors, and follow the sign to the start of the hike.  It's a steep start but you are surrounded by proteas and other fynbos, (indigenous vegetation) to keep your mind off the ascent!  There are wonderful views of Hout Bay as you round the first peak, and the final ascent gives you great views of Fish Hoek, Noordhoek Beach and even Gordon's Bay on the far side of False Bay if it's a clear day. Return to your vehicles the same route.

Picnics

Cape Town is spoiled for choice when it comes to picnic spots, but #Chappies rates highly in the perfect picnic department! There are some 60 picnic tables on the 9km drive. You won't have to walk to get a quiet, secluded spot in nature, with jaw-dropping views. Add the opportunity to share your picnic with friends or family and it's a recipe for success.

Table Mountain National Park

Table Mountain National Park, starting from Table Mountain - one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World - in Cape Town city center stretches all the way south on the Cape Peninsula to Cape Point Nature Reserve - Cape of Good Hope.

Cape of Good Hope - also known as the Cape of Storms - found at the south western most tip of Africa and was referred to back in 1580 by Sir Francis Drake as the "The Fairest Cape in all the World". This a world-famous nature reserve which is bound by the cold waters of the Atlantic in the west and the warm waters of False Bay in the east. With a diverse flora and fauna distribution the wildlife you can expect to find in this as the only fenced park in the range are Bontebok, Chacma Baboons, Eland, Red Hartebeest and Cape Mountain Zebra. Bird life including sea birds can be found in abundance and is quite interesting too, especially so when ostriches are found on the beach. The trip to the promontory from the Lighthouse with its spectacular views over False Bay can be undertaken on foot or by funicular. The Buffelsfontein Visitor Centre is a great space to learn about all the plants and animals to look out for in a particular season. It is also a haven for the outdoor enthusiast who enjoy hiking, surfing, angling, picnicking, beaching and cycling; against the spectacular backdrop of the mountains and coastline of the Cape Peninsula. Several of the activities are regulated and require permits, you can find more info here

Noordhoek

Noordhoek, at the southern end of Chapman's Peak Drive, is a vibrant rural and artistic community village just 25 minutes south of Cape Town – the last remaining truly rural area and country village in the Cape Peninsula. Noordhoek offers a tranquil country lifestyle combined with a colourful village atmosphere.

Horse-riding on Noordhoek Beach is one of the most popular activities in Noordhoek and Noordhoek Farm Village is one of the main centres in the town for accommodation, dining, shopping and entertainment. The Red Herring Trading Post is another popular shopping and eating centre.

Vineyards and vegetable farming are returning to Noordhoek. Indigenous Cape Fynbos - including groves of scarce Milkwood and Yellowwood trees - cover the slopes of surrounding mountains and stretch down to the coastal plain and wetlands area.

Hout Bay

Hout Bay, on the northern side of Chapman's Peak Drive, is a twenty-minute drive from Cape Town. Surrounded entirely by mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Hout Bay offers some 40 restaurants, a wide array of antique and art shops, stalls, a waterfront that is both quaint and commercial, weekend markets and accommodation to suit every pocket and taste.

Hout Bay boasts one of the most active fishing harbours in South Africa. Housed within the harbour are the yacht and power-boat marinas - both popular and convenient stopovers for craft from all parts of the globe. The Bay itself is probably one of the safest sailing venues anywhere, and is also ideal at most times for water sports of all kinds. The mountains surrounding the valley provide hiking routes with breathtaking views. The wetlands around the Disa River support an abundance of bird life.

Perfect Picnics on Chapman’s Peak Drive

As the days get longer, lazier and warmer, the birds get chirpier and the blossoms brighter, so the urge to pack a picnic basket, grab a blanket and head outdoors becomes more prevalent in our thinking and planning and actions. Summer is here- which definitely makes it time to grab a picnic basket and get out there!

Cape Town is spoiled for choice when it comes to picnic spots. Head for one of the many beaches in and around the Cape, put in a little effort and hike to a vantage point on the mountain side, cruise into the botanical gardens at Kirstenbosch or come and join us on #Chappies for the perfect picnic.

Chapman’s Peak Drive is simply gorgeous for a picnic and does not have a baboon factor risking your picnic either! There are some 60 picnic tables on the 9km drive of Chapman’s Peak! Each picnic table has a view of mountain and sea with jaw-dropping scenes and sunsets. What’s not to love about sitting out in nature, enjoying good company and a plate full of delicious food? You won’t have to walk far from your car to a picnic table with a view on #Chappies.

Essentials for the perfect picnic!

  • Plan ahead for your guests, your food and your supplies!
  • Venue (where are you picnicking and what amenities and facilities are available?
  • Time of day (breakfast, lunch, dinner?)
  • Who is coming to the picnic – do we need stuff for kids or chairs for the grandparents?
  • Picnic blanket and or chairs – personal choice of course but do plan your seating.
  • Picnic basket: a picnic basket does not have to be a basket- it could be a backpack or a crate or a cooler too!
  • Picnic Food: Picnic friendly food is different for everyone but traditionally includes cheese, cured meats, breads and finger foods. Foods that are easy to pack, easy to eat.
  • Drinks: It’s not all about the food. Keep them chilled for a refresher!
  • Good ideas for Main Meals: Wraps, Rolls, Cured meats, Chicken pieces, grilled finger foods.
  • Good ideas for Side dishes or accompaniments: Salads, Coleslaw, Fruits, veggies
  • Good ideas for Desserts: Brownies, bars, cookies, cupcakes, fruit kebabs!

While we’re on the subject, there are some other things you might want to pack: insect repellant, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, condiments (salt and pepper especially), paper towels or serviettes. Always bring a few knives just in case for cutting up fruits and veggies, slicing cake or tarts. And a bottle opener is a must for drinks.

The last thing is to think about what you’ll be doing when you’re not munching. It’s a personal choice but for me this activity is a good company or a good book or magazine. If you have the kids take bubbles, balls and frisbees, kites, and other activities they can do outdoors. A good set of binoculars can really help for those bird-watching moments during your picnic.

A final note:  Rubbish bins are provided at all picnic sites and cleared regularly, please use them and leave picnic site the way you would like to find it.
