Chapman's Peak Drive & cyclists update, February 2016

Tuesday, 09 February 2016 10:49

On the 6 March 2016,  the Cape Town Cycle Tour will be taking place.  This is one of the most popular and spectacular cycling races on the planet and it is definitely the largest timed cycle race in the world.   The 2015 Cape Town Cycle Tour, dubbed the Show you Care Solidarity Ride, drew nearly 34000 cyclists who pedalled a substantially reduced 47km route in support of the fire fighters who battled the blaze and residents affected in the week leading up to the 2015 event.

One of the most popular sections of the Cape Town Cycle Tour is the stretch along Chapman's Peak Drive  and we are working to hard to make sure that the 2016 Cape Town Cycle Tour returns to it's much-loved format in anticipation of tackling the 109km route.

We know that #Chappies is one of the preferred  training route for the event.  We know how frustrating  it is to see those big yellow signs that say "No cyclists past here".  We know you are desperate to cycle the length of #Chappies without fear of reprisal or a rock landing on a body part  We know how you love that sea breeze as you round the corner, that burn as push you the last uphill section to the viewpoint, and that relief as the breeze blows at your back on the downhill.  We know how you miss the triumph and the anguish of those training rides.

We are sorry that the fire caused so much instability and that the unstable slopes have kept you from cycling the full length of Chappies due to safety  reasons.  We appreciate your patience and we appreciate those who have headed the rules.   The good news is that we are looking to open the drive to runners andcyclists SAFELY towards the end of February.

The site & structural engineers and safety experts are busy with the final checks for slope stability.  We are hoping that the Green Light will be given before the end of February 2016.  Then we ask you to share your delight and your jubilation of being back on #Chappies.  It's been a year-long goal to get cyclists & runners back on the open road between the Hout Bay View Point and Noordhoek.   The time is soon! We look forward to seeing those bicycle photos - the raised arms of success, the group shots, the views, the smiles, the groans, the conquests, triumphs, the success and lots of bikes!  We look forward to seeing your training rides,  your social rides or your solo rides via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.  Use the Hashtag: #Chappies to play, post or brag!  Upload and tag your cycling images please.

We look forward to welcoming you to the #Chappies experience on race day.
