Chapman’s Peak Drive - it pays to be a Frequent User. On 1 June 2008 the annual toll tariff changes for Chapman’s Peak Drive will be implemented.
A feature of the tariff structure since the road was opened in 2003 has been the deep discounts offered to registered commuters and frequent users. These discounts are even greater if the registered frequent user also has a Wild Card sold by Table Mountain National Parks or South African National Parks. In order to register as a Frequent User or a Wild Card Frequent User all one has to do is visit the Entilini Office in Hout Bay or at Noordhoek Farm Village. Registration can be linked to a driver’s own South African bank credit card for automatic monthly payments, or a monetary deposit can be put down from which trip charges will be deducted. Users paying by means of a deposit will be issued with the CPD toll authority debit card for use at the toll plaza.
In an effort to attract more frequent users and commuters to use the road the tariff for Wild Card Frequent Users making more than 28 trips per calendar month reduces to R1 for trips in excess of 28 per month. After 40 trips, which is the number of times a commuter might use the road in a month, the Wild Card Frequent User will have enjoyed an average discount of 60% off the normal tariff.
The rise in the inflation rate transfers through to a new tariff for class 2 vehicles, which includes most cars and bakkies, of R26. Although it is unable to influence the calculation of this standard tariff, Entilini Concession has ensured that the discount structure results in an average increase of only 5,2% after 40 trips, and if a user were to do around 50 trips per month the total cost would be 1,8% LESS than it was last year.
The discount structure, where applicable, provides for the base tariff to apply for the first 3 trips and then for the tariff to reduce after a certain number of trips thereafter. For example, for Wild Card Frequent Users, the tariff reduces to R17 after the first 3 trips and then to R15 after the next 3 trips and to R12.5 after the next 3, etc. After 40 trips the average paid by this class of user would be R7.34 per trip.

Chapman’s Peak Drive passes through the scenic Table Mountain National Park and is operated in close association with TMNP. In recognition of this close association Entilini Concession gives Chapman’s Peak Drive users who hold a Wild Card a special dispensation once they have registered that card with Entilini. The Wild Card is issued by the TMNP and SA National Parks and allows holders special discounts at park facilities and certain other attractions. Road users who wish to obtain a Wild Card in order to qualify for the lowest discount structure should apply at any TMNP offices or participating information bureaux.
"Road users are invited to contact the Entilini office in either Hout Bay or Noordhoek, or to visit the toll plaza on the Hout Bay side of the toll road, to discuss the best discount package for them." |
