Winter is Coming

Wednesday, 31 May 2017 09:12

Despite unseasonable sunny days in Cape Town and persistent and severe drought conditions, winter is coming to Cape Town.

Our frequent users will know that Chapman’s Peak Drive will, in the interest of user safety, be closed from time to time. This will typically be during times of high winds, heavy rainfall or continuous rain, maintenance or the clearing of rocks caught in the catch fences.

The vegetation on our mountain slopes has not fully recovered since the wild fires of March 2015, which makes our slopes vulnerable to mudslides and could be potentially dangerous for road users on Chapman's Peak Drive. High winds in particular can also affect the safety of users on the drive.

With winter around the corner, strict protocol management will be in place on Chapman's Peak Drive this winter and the road may be closed more frequently during the 2017 winter season to manage potentially dangerous conditions.

Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road, with annual inflationary increases. Each category of vehicle pays a different tariff and the tariff is applicable in each direction. Please note that the annual increase will take place on the 1 July 2017, once the new toll tariffs have been approved in the Government Gazette. The increase arises from a contractual arrangement between the Department of Transport and Public Works and the Concessionaire and the anticipated increase will be line with Consumer Price Index (CPI) and rate of inflation and is likely to be 6%.
